  • Molecular Interaction Analysis for Understanding Perfluoroalkyl Compound-Specific Properties, Shimoaka Takafumi, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Kyoto University, 01 Apr. 2017, 31 Mar. 2021, In this project, we studied the intermolecular interactions between perfluoroalkyl (Rf) compounds and heterogeneous molecules. As a representative result, we found a characteristic property of liquid perfluoroalkanes on the water surface: those remain on the water surface for a long time. This result indicates that perfluoroalkane molecules have a good affinity at the air-water interface, although Rf compounds are known to have a low affinity to water in general. This property does not appear in non-fluorinated organic solvents. As a result, the specific character of perfluoroalkanes on the water surface is surely attributed to the molecular interactive force derived from the large dipole., 17K14502
  • Development of Analytical Techniques for Studying the Structure and Property of a Polymer Influenced by Minute Water Molecules Involved in a Polymer Thin Film, Shimoaka Takafumi; Hasegawa Takeshi; Wakai Chihiro; Katsumoto Yukiteru, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Kyoto University, 01 Apr. 2014, 31 Mar. 2018, In the research project, water molecules involved in a polymer thin film were investigated. A notable research result is about Nafion, which is used as a representative proton exchange membrane. Thus far, only two kinds of water about a sulfonic acid (SA) group have been known, i.e., the hydration water and exterior bulky water. To understand the hydration state of water on the SA group, 1H NMR spectra were analyzed, and a new third water species was found, which was also found to be significantly restricted in motion. This motion-restricted water was further studied by the IR spectral ‘variation’ in detail with an aid of quantum calculation by changing the number of hydration water molecules. As a result, the newly found “third water” was revealed to have a H-bonded complex with a unique ring-shape on two sites of the SA group, which explains the motion restriction., 26810075
  • Development of a novel spectroscopic technique for revealing the molecular orientation in a thin film deposited on particles or a rough surface, Hasegawa Takeshi; SHIMOAKA Takafumi, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, Kyoto University, 01 Apr. 2014, 31 Mar. 2017, Surface selection rule (SSR) for discussing the molecular orientation in a thin film adsorbed on a rough surface is figured out by analyzing a surface monolayer by defining the angle of incidence and polarizations. By introducing crossed-Nicol polarizers in the incident and detection paths, the specular reflection and diffuse reflection components are readily separated. To fully understand the spectra of the SAM, a new idea is proposed that the incidental light can be excluded from the discussion when the angle of incidence is small, which is named the pseudo-transmission (pd-Tr) model. Through the experiments of all the combinations of polarizations and angles of incidence, the pd-Tr model and the light suppression are found to be an important base to fully understand the SSR of molecular adsorbates on a rough surface of a non-absorbing medium., 26620118
