It is even hypothesized that vitamin D deficiency during fatal period induces increased risk of diseases in later life. In Japan, many young women culturally avoid sunshine and take inappropriate diet for body-proportion. We showed that vitamin D deficiency is actually very severe in Japanese pregnant women, and vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for allergy-like symptoms in these women. Serum 25(OH)D was less than 20ng/mL in 71.3% of cases. The adjusted odds ratio for occurrence of any allergic symptom in deficient cases compared with other cases was 1.22 (95% CI: 1.03-1.45, p=0.02). In deficient cases, statistically significant risk elevation for allergic symptom was observed at the event of desert dust arrival (OR 1.39, 1.18-1.64, p<0.001) or pollen dispersal(OR 1.51, 1.27-1.79, p<0.001), while not in vitamin D sufficient cases (OR 1.10, 0.76-1.60, p=0.61; OR 1.14, 0.78-1.66, p=0.49)., 25350044
  • Fatty acid composition in the postmortem frontal cortex of patients with schizophrenia: A case-control study, Hamazaki Kei; YOSHIKAWA Takeo, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), University of Toyama, 01 Apr. 2013, 31 Mar. 2016, Principal investigator, Abnormal levels of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been found in the postmortem frontal cortex, particularly the orbitofrontal cortex, of patients with schizophrenia. Altered mRNA expression of fatty acid binding protein (FABP) 5 and FABP7 has likewise been reported. This study investigated whether PUFAs in the frontal cortex [Brodmann area (BA) 8] and mRNA expression of FABP3, 5, and 7 were different between patients with schizophrenia (n = 95) and unaffected controls (n= 93). No significant differences were found in DHA between the groups. Although arachidonic acid (AA) levels were significantly decreased in the schizophrenia group, no association was found between AA and schizophrenia on logistic regression analysis. Only FABP3 expression was significantly lower in the schizophrenia group than in the control group., Competitive research funding, 25461726

  • Comprehensive understanding of pathobiology of mental illnesses by examining relationship between polyunsaturated fatty acids and oligodendrocyte precursor cells, YOSHIKAWA TAKEO; YAMADA Kazuo; MAEKAWA Motoko; HAMASAKI Kei, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, 01 Apr. 2011, 31 Mar. 2014, Coinvestigator not use grants, One of the cogent hypotheses of schizophrenia etiology is "neurodevelopmental abnormality theory", which proposes that subtle insults during brain developmental period"underlies the susceptibility of schizophrenia. We tested this theory by raising mice with polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-deficient diet during neurodevelopmental stage (PUFA(-)-mice). The PUFA(-)-mice displayed behavioral phenotypes reminiscent of early stage of schizophrenia. Interestingly, myelin-related genes were down-regulated in the frontal cortex of PUFA(-)-mice as in the postmortem brains of schizophrenia. We revealed that the above downregulations are caused by decreased expressions of transcription factor genes, TF-A and TF-B. The promoter regions of TF-A and TF-B from the brains of PUFA(-)-mice showed elevated DNA methylation, which probably lead to the lowered expressions of TF-A and TF-B., Competitive research funding, 23249060

We reported a significance of the results in an international conference (IPC/IOPC 2012). We found that there was a dose-response relationship between the cumulative number of patients and the logarithm of cumulative cedar pollen count. We did not get any clear correlations between the fatty acids and serum IgE antibodies. However, some differences were observed in the threshold level among groups of the patients divided by the EPA. It was suggested that EPA might impact on the threshold level in the pollen allergy patients., Competitive research funding, 23659345

More females had a high OS index of the whole spine. 2)There was no significant difference was found in the concentration of mead acid between the patient group and the control group. 3)This study is undergoing. Recently, polyunsaturated fatty acids were also reported to be associated with osteoporosis. In this study, we measured the blood level of fatty acids in patients with osteoporotic fracture in elderly and examined the association between fatty acids level and the risk of osteoporotic fracture., Competitive research funding, 21790575
