We developed a “Multi-Volume Matching” technique based on our 2D-3D patient positioning software. In this technique, a 3D-CT volume was divided into multi-volumes such as a volume of interest (VOI) and a base volume (BV). The VOI was segmented so as to include structure whose motion appears in X-ray images. Then, 2D-3D matching was processed using X-ray images and Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs, which were repeatedly generated by changing 3D positions and angles of VOI and BV independently to match most with the X-ray images.   • Study on high-precision carbon-ion treatment for tumors with respiratory motion by 4-dimensional treatment planning, TASHIRO Mutsumi, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Gunma University, 2011, 2012, The system environment has been created, which can deal with actual clinical CT data using a deformable fusion (registration) software for the respiratory motion evaluation with 4DCT images. A treatment-planning support tool has been also installed to be able to calculate dose distributions for a number of 3DCT images (4DCT image) at one time with an identical treatment plan condition. By use of these tools, accumulated dose distributions could be derived for CT images with different patient positions and/or with respiratory motion and deformation by considering such motion and deformation.   • Study on quantitative evaluation of respiratory-induced organ motion and high-precision particle cancer therapy, TASHIRO Mutsumi, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Gunma University, 2008, 2009, Lung motion evaluation techniques have been studied using CT images in order to make highly precise radiation/particle therapy for lung cancer with respiratory motion. The extraction methods of lung areas and vessels with realistic CT images, which would influence on the motion tracking accuracy, have been investigated, and the unnecessarily fine structure extraction of lung borders and vessels could be suppressed. Verification on respiratory gated-irradiation of heavy-ion therapy for lung tumors has been carried out to realize the high-precision therapy. Particularly, investigations have been carried out on evaluation of motion errors and margins, and how to deal with the margins in heavy-ion treatment planning system.
