    Tomohiro HOSOI is a project researcher based in the Institute of Social Science, at the University of Tokyo, Japan. He has studied mainly two themes of current African affairs. His first interest is the relationship between Japan and the African continent, focusing on the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). He surveyed diplomatic documents in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs archives in Japan to reveal the decision-making process for implementing TICAD. Second, he has studied comparative administration studies in various African countries. Hosoi is interested in the variety of administrative capacities in African countries. He conducted qualitative and quantitative surveys in South Africa to explore why these differences occur. In addition to these main themes, he has vigorously participated in various international collaborative projects, such as a project on wars in Africa and, a joint sociological research project about the impact of COVID-19 on South African middle-class people.
